Broome is an isolated town. Situated on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert on the west coast, it’s about half way between Darwin and Perth. By road the nearest towns are Derby about 220km to the east and Port Headland 600km to the south.

Broome tides can be very challenging to get used to and they have taken many things from the unsuspecting. Amongst the biggest in the world, Broome tides can vary from low to high by as much as 10 metres. As Cable Beach is on such a slight gradient the result can be a difference of over 100 metres from when the tide is low to when the tide is high

After a long and not particularly wet, wet season, people in Broome start looking for any sign of the coming dry season. After several months of overnight lows as high as 28 degrees, April sees the town grasping for indicators.

Broome’s multicultural community is a positive reflection of the migration that has led to modern Australia. People migrated to Australia from all over the world. In Broome the migration was mainly Asian and provided labour for the pearling industry. In the late 1980’s it was a migration of epic proportion.

Broome has lots of interesting infrastructure. It’s home to a beach that’s named after one of the most important infrastructure projects of the nineteenth century. Cable Beach is where the Banjoewangie, Java to Cable Beach sub sea telegraph cable emerged.

For most of the year being a weather forecaster in Broome would be the most boring job in Australia. It would be like a fine and sunny ground hog day with a maximum in the low thirties and an overnight minimum in the teens or low twenties.

Broome has become the roundabout capital of the world, with more roundabouts per capita than dogs, and Broome is a dog-lover’s town. In a bid to remain traffic-light free, the Shire of Broome has invested heavily in roundabouts for its traffic management strategy.

The Sun Picture Gardens (also known as Sun Pictures) is the world's oldest picture gardens still in operation. After Broome was established, a Chinatown area emerged after the town became home to a large Asian population.

The options for cuisine in Broome have reached a new high with the latest addition of a weekly Korean brunch. The Wharf Restaurant, famous for its fresh seafood and daily half priced oysters have recently employed traditional Korean trained Chef Truong Phuong to deliver the Korean Brunch each Friday Saturday and Sunday until 9am to noon.
