Sirens of Song

A gathering of some of Australia’s best singers, songwriters and instrumentalists in Broome for a birthday has metamorphasised into a collaborative concert to celebrate women in music! Sirens of Song will feature 11 artists from across Australia, plus a number of combined acts in the spirit of musical collaboration. The sirens of mythology were dangerous creatures who lured sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the remote coasts. This collective of modern day sirens are also dangerous; dangerously entertaining, as they navigate effortlessly through folk, bluegrass, country, rock, soul and indi-pop sounds.

Gleny Rae Virus is a country girl with an international heart, currently teaching and making music in Alice Springs. She has performed many times in Broome, and decided to celebrate her birthday in style this year; surrounded by her brilliant musician friends in her favourite coastal paradise!
Sarah Carroll – Ukulele Queen of the Bellarine – has won hearts and minds at Australia’s most prominent festivals and pubs over a 30 year career with her sincere songs and big hearted performances.
Suzannah Espie has an intoxicating voice which can move from sweet and gentle to an Aretha roar, and was named the 2013 Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist of the Year.
Together, they are The Junes, a country-folk supergroup featuring exquisite harmonies, deft instrument swaps, a genre bending array of original songs and a sharp witted stage presence. The Junes are the most fun you can have with your clothes on, a musical experience where the combination is greater than the sum of the parts!
Jenny Shimmin is the first lady of bluegrass banjo in Australia, and has been side woman to most of the stars of country music.
Kate Oliver has a straight up voice from a long-ago time; where life experience meets the kind of timbre which could melt an entire collection of 45 records!
Miss Jodie plays a variety of instruments and is in several blues based bands on the east coast, but is best loved for her big voice and big instrument; the double bass!
Robbie Long does it all; he plays most instruments, sings, produces, engineers and has long performing career with the likes of Mic Conway and 2012 Starmaker Bob Corbett.
Helena Kitley has a voice as big as her boots and more jaw-dropping than her amazing outfits, able to belt out Susie Quatro or Aretha Franklin with singular ease.
Emily Smith is an accomplished guitarist who can fingerpick the tenderest love song or shred a rockin’ solo. She has worked alongside some of the biggest names in the country music scene, most recently Bill Chambers.
Ally Bowie is the original riot grrl drummer who is regularly seen smashing it out and screaming in Newcastle pubs with The Outliers.
“Merman” Smithy plays bass with a number of country and roots acts in Sydney, including Bridie King and Rob Luckey.
Conceived and directed by Gleny Rae Virus, Huntress is focuses the spotlight on talented side women and lead ladies of the Hunter region, while tipping their hats to the great female musical influences of the 20-21st century. Expect to hear songs by Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Kate Bush, Suzi Quatro, Nina Simone, Joan Jett, Tina Turner and more!
